How my friend handled her furnace when it suddenly stopped working

|

I took a trip to a different part of the country to see my friend in winter.

  • It was a bit chilly than normal, even inside her house.

I asked if she had a heating system, and she confirmed that her furnace was on. I brushed it off and thought that maybe I was not used to the weather on this side of town. However, three hours on, and the cold seemed to intensify no matter how many sweaters and warm clothing I had on. I also noticed that she was getting cold. That is when we decided to check the furnace to realize that it had been off for a long time. I remember that I had such a problem with my heat pump back home when the circuit breaker went off without my knowledge. This was the first thing we checked when we realized that the furnace was not working. However, the circuit breaker was on, and nothing seemed wrong with it, at least nothing that we could see. We then checked the filter or clogging since I remembered my HVAC technician advising on changing the filters regularly. It turns out that my friend had changed the filters a few days before, and there was not much dirt to cause any airflow restriction. With this cleared, we moved on to check the ignition or pilot light, and it seemed to be fine since it switched on when we tried it. After all our attempts, we decided to call the HVAC contractor from the nearest HVAC business center to check and diagnose it professionally. There were a few loose wires and connections that seemed to be behind the entire issue. After fixing this, the furnace turned on and sustained the heating process long enough to keep us warm.
